Genoa is a coastal city in Liguria, north-west Italy, on the Ligurian Sea. It stretches along a long, narrow strip of land between the water and the Apennine hills, with the Porto Antico old harbour at its heart and a major working and ferry port alongside it. The comune counted 566,247 residents at 1 January 2026, with 820,691 in the metropolitan city, according to ISTAT figures reported via comuniecitta.it. In Italian the city is called Genova, a name that survives inside proper names such as Genova Piazza Principe, Genova Brignole and the Genova Cristoforo Colombo airport, while English prose uses Genoa throughout.

Where Is Genoa?

Genoa lies on the north-west coast of Italy, in the region of Liguria, facing the Ligurian Sea between the French Riviera to the west and Tuscany to the south-east. The city centre sits at Piazza De Ferrari, roughly 119 km in a straight line from Milan, 123 km from Turin and about 141 km from Nice and Monaco. It is a port city through and through, with cruise terminals, ferry piers and a commercial harbour all inside the urban area.

That position explains a great deal about the place. Genoa grew as a maritime republic that lasted until 1797, when Napoleonic occupation ended it, as the Treccani encyclopedia records, and its old town still covers 113 hectares of narrow lanes, the caruggi, described by the city's own tourism site as one of the largest medieval historic centres in Europe. In 2006 UNESCO inscribed "Genoa: Le Strade Nuove and the system of the Palazzi dei Rolli", a World Heritage property containing 42 palaces, on the World Heritage List. The sea is never far and the hills are never far either: the airport sits about 7 km west of Piazza De Ferrari, while Boccadasse, the old fishermen's village now inside the city, lies about 4 km to the east.

If the question behind the question is whether the city deserves the detour, the companion page Is Genoa Worth Visiting? covers that in detail, and Why Is Genoa Famous? lists what put it on the map.

What Region Is Genoa In, And What Does It Border?

Genoa is the chief city of Liguria, one of Italy's twenty regions, and it is also the capital of the Città Metropolitana di Genova, the metropolitan province that gives the region its name. Liguria is the thin coastal arc between France and Tuscany, and Genoa sits at about its midpoint on the north-west Italian coast. To the west along the same shore lie the Riviera di Ponente towns, and to the east lie Portofino, the Cinque Terre and the Gulf of La Spezia.

The immediate geography is steep. The city occupies the strip between the Ligurian Sea and the Apennine hills, which is why districts climb the slopes in terraces and why AMT Genova, the transit operator, runs public lifts and funiculars as ordinary parts of the network. The Zecca-Righi funicular and the Castelletto Levante lift both run daily from 06:40 to 24:00, and a single ride on a lift or the Sant'Anna funicular costs 1.20 EUR on the AMT fare table. The time zone is Europe/Rome, the same as the rest of mainland Italy.

The eastern edge of the city is where the coastline Genoa is known for begins. Nervi, with its cliff-top Passeggiata Anita Garibaldi and the Parchi di Nervi covering some 9.2 hectares, is about 9 km from the centre, and beyond it the Gulf of Tigullio starts.

How Far Is Genoa From Milan, Turin, Nice And The Cinque Terre?

Measured in a straight line from Piazza De Ferrari, Genoa is about 119 km from Milan, 123 km from Turin and about 141 km from Nice and Monaco, placing it squarely between two of Europe's best-known destinations. Along its own coast it is close to the famous villages: Portofino lies about 25 km away, San Fruttuoso about 22 km, Camogli about 18 km and the Cinque Terre about 67 km. The airport is roughly 7 km west of the centre.

These are straight-line distances; road routes follow the coast and the hills and run longer. For the rail traveller, reported Trenitalia schedules put Genoa to Milan at about 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours direct, with fares from about 11 EUR, and Turin at about 1 hour 36 minutes to 2 hours 18 minutes. Prices are dynamic, so check trenitalia.com for the date. The table below gathers the straight-line figures:

Place Straight-line distance from Piazza De Ferrari
Genova Cristoforo Colombo airport about 7 km
Boccadasse about 4 km
Nervi about 9 km
Pegli about 10 km
Camogli about 18 km
San Fruttuoso about 22 km
Portofino about 25 km
Santa Margherita Ligure about 24 km
Sestri Levante about 40 km
Cinque Terre about 67 km
Portovenere about 82 km
Milan about 119 km
Turin about 123 km
Nice and Monaco about 141 km

That cluster of eastern villages is close enough to reach on a single long day, which is why the boat routes matter here. Golfo Paradiso runs its "Two Gulfs" tour from Genova Porto Antico on listed dates from March, calling at Camogli, San Fruttuoso and Portofino, with the full-day return reported at about 29 EUR. There is no regular scheduled ferry from Genoa to the Cinque Terre; the operator runs that trip only on set dates.

Is Genoa On The Sea Or Inland?

Genoa is unambiguously on the sea: it is a coastal port city on the Ligurian Sea with the Porto Antico old harbour, cruise terminals at Ponte dei Mille and Andrea Doria, and ferry piers at Calata Chiappella, Ponte Caracciolo and Ponte Colombo all inside the city. The port's own "port in numbers" page records 2.4 million cruise passengers and 2.6 million ferry passengers, figures no inland city could produce. The beach suburb of Boccadasse and the promenade village of Nervi are part of the city itself.

Ferry lines including GNV, Moby, Tirrenia and Co.Tu.Nav sail from the Stazioni Marittime to Sardinia, Corsica, Sicily, Barcelona and Tunis, per the terminals' live departure table. Swimming deserves one caution: ARPAL's 2026 bathing-water classification for Liguria grades Boccadasse as SCARSA, the poor class, while the sampling point on the Nervi promenade is graded BUONA, so the water quality varies along the city's own shore. ARPAL runs 380 sampling points on the Ligurian coast in four classes from eccellente down to scarsa. Everything else covered here is indexed on Genoa Travel Guide.

The Aquarium of Genoa, opened in 1992, anchors the Porto Antico, and the Bigo panoramic lift stands beside it as part of the Renzo Piano redevelopment of the old harbour. More on all of this sits on the root page, things to do in Genoa.

How Do You Get To Genoa?

By air you land at Genova Cristoforo Colombo airport, about 7 km west of the centre, and reach the city on the Volabus, which runs to Genova Piazza Principe, Piazza De Ferrari and Genova Brignole in about 30 minutes and requires the Met Daily ticket at 10.00 EUR for 24 hours on the whole AMT network. By train you arrive at Genova Piazza Principe or Genova Brignole, both on the coastal main line. The fixed airport taxi fare to the centre is 25 EUR per car.

The airport's own page sets that taxi fare, with 30 EUR for groups over four people and a 2 EUR supplement at night and on holidays. The Volabus requires the 10.00 EUR Met Daily ticket, which covers buses, the metro, lifts, funiculars and line 782 towards Portofino for 24 hours. A single ordinary AMT ticket costs 2.00 EUR and is valid 110 minutes on the urban network. Inside the city the metro runs 7 km from Brin to Brignole with 8 stations; the extensions to Canepari and Martinez are not open yet, with Canepari reported as targeted for June 2027 and Martinez for December 2028.

Once oriented, a guided walk is a practical first move, and the Must-See Attractions walk through the centre is one option: Check availability. For sizing the stop, How Many Days In Genoa Is Enough? works through the arithmetic, and Is Genoa A Walkable City? covers the vertical bits.

What Is The Weather Like Where Genoa Sits?

The official 1971-2000 climate normals for Genova Sestri, the Aeronautica Militare station at the airport, show a Mediterranean coastal pattern: January averages a high of 11.5 C and a low of 5.5 C, August averages 27.7 C and 21.0 C, and October carries the heaviest monthly rainfall at 171.3 mm, while July is the lightest at 24.2 mm. The yearly rain total is 1079.2 mm. These are station normals measured at sea level, 3 m above the shore.

Month Mean high C Mean low C Rain mm
Jan 11.5 5.5 101.8
Apr 16.8 10.5 88.0
Jul 27.3 20.9 24.2
Oct 20.0 13.8 171.3

The full monthly table lives on the site's weather pages; the figures here come only from the CLINO 1971-2000 normals for Genova Sestri. The autumn rainfall peak matters for trip planning, since it coincides with the Festival della Scienza, which ran 22 October to 1 November in 2026, and the Salone Nautico, which ran 1 to 6 October in 2026 and is already fixed for 30 September to 5 October 2027.

Where Is Genoa Relative To Its Day-Trip Coastline?

Genoa sits at the western gateway to the Riviera di Levante, the stretch of Ligurian coast that runs east towards Portofino, San Fruttuoso, Camogli, Santa Margherita Ligure, Sestri Levante and the Cinque Terre, all within about 67 km of the centre. To the west, the Riviera di Ponente reaches Varazze, Savona, Noli, Finale Ligure, Alassio and Sanremo. Inland, Milan and Turin sit on the north Italian plain across the Apennines.

Boats and trains share this work. Camogli to San Fruttuoso boats run year round, about 30 minutes each way, and the Servizio Marittimo del Tigullio connects Rapallo, Santa Margherita Ligure and Portofino with a Super Cinque Terre day trip reported at 47 EUR return. On land, the Cinque Terre Treno Card costs from 22.00 to 35.00 EUR for one adult day depending on the date band. A full plan for the eastern shore starts at the Cinque Terre guide and the Portofino guide, and the choice between the two towns is argued in Is It Better To Go To Genoa Or Portofino?.
